Introduction

Elizabeth Raeburn studied studio pottery at Harrow School of Art, working briefly as a production student in David Leach's workshop.  In 1976 she moved to Somerset, where she established a pottery with Rodney Lawrence.

Her award winning handbuilt sculptural pots and freestanding landscape tiles are Raku fired to powerful effect.  Even in well-controlled circumstances, the firing of ceramics can be unpredictable; Raku firing gives an added variant to the creative process and the surprise element this brings adds a new dimension to Elizabeth's work and a creative counterbalance to her carefully constructed pots.

Elizabeth's work is represented on the British Craft Council Selected Index, and in many public and private collections at home and abroad. In 1992/93 two of her pieces won prizes at an exhibition at the National Museum of History, Taipei, and were subsequently acquired by the museum.

During 1997-98 her work was shown at Sotheby's Exhibition of Contemporary Decorative Arts and she was commissioned by Harvard University for a presentation at the book launch of The Quest for Longitude. In 2003 she was one of four of David Leach's students whose work was included in his retrospective exhibition which toured the UK.
